All of that in this episode with Patty Lawrence, Founder of Turboexes, a Consulting CFO.
Entrepreneurship Opens More Doors
Growing up, you are always told to study hard and get a good degree. Having a good degree will land you a good job and, in return, a better life. This is the mentality that some of us absorbed growing up. This belief is hard to throw away for some people because it has been their belief since childhood.
For many, the lure of entrepreneurship can’t be resisted. Some of the most successful people in the world are entrepreneurs. It’s easy to see why. As an entrepreneur, you have complete control over the nature of your work and life, including your hours, income, and goals. Many people think that they can’t handle being an entrepreneur. But the truth is that being an entrepreneur is better than employment in many ways.
Most experts separate the word self-employment from entrepreneurship because the main difference is that the self-employed person creates their own job. In contrast, the entrepreneur creates a business that requires a team of people and more resources that the entrepreneur will adequately manage.
The Start of Every Entrepreneur
Being your own boss, calling all the shots, hustling to hit your goals — for many people, entrepreneurship is the ultimate career goal. But as awesome as running your own business sounds, it's also challenging.
Every entrepreneur goes through an adjustment process where they struggle to adjust one way or another. When you work in a corporate environment, as long as you work, you will get a paycheck every month. But becoming an entrepreneur is hard because you don’t know where to get your money. Then, the question that will solve the problem comes: “where will I get my clients from?” One of the effective ways is to clearly get the word out. Make sure people find your business and see that your business can solve their problems.
Another way to help you start your business is to find people you can mentor you and teach you the best practices and techniques. One of the benefits when you become an entrepreneur is you get to meet with people who love to help newcomers in the industry. You will be able to benefit from their stories and experiences, and there is no better teacher than experience.
The Turning Point In Every Business
Every entrepreneur has their version of the story where they are struggling in their business and the option to go back and get a job comes to their mind. Entrepreneurs know that it is a bad route for them to take because when you start becoming your own boss, it’s very difficult to work under others again as becoming a boss makes most entrepreneurs unemployable.
But entrepreneurs should remember the turning point where they find their purpose of becoming an entrepreneur, to recommit themselves to double their efforts and do whatever it takes to make it through the struggles. Because in entrepreneurship, struggles are always present, but every win is a learning experience, and the struggles you can look back on can help you see how you are growing.
The Secret to Growth In Your Business
There are many ways to grow as a business, but David and Patty talked about the way to grow to recognize that you as the owner, are not the rockstar, that you are in the way of the growth sometimes. Rrealize that you can hire people that are better than you and start delegating tasks to them, and not micromanage. When your goal is to make your business run without you, then you are on the right path toward growth.
Most business owners become a slave to their job, instead of moving from corporate jobs to create their own businesses to free themselves. There is no other way to break free from that than hiring people that will replace you in the business you created.
The best leaders are known for being the best learners. Anyone can succeed if they prepare themselves to advance in their career. If you’re looking to develop yourself professionally, you’re already one step ahead.
