Iman Aghay, Public Speaker and Entrepreneur
Iman has been through difficult processes, from being close to becoming homeless to almost dying. However, he has had a breakthrough in every single one of these difficult situations. His mindset changed for the better each time he faced a challenge, and that’s why his mission is to add value to people’s lives. Learn from Iman’s mistakes and triumphs in this week’s episode.
Here are three key lessons from this episode:
1) Hard Times Teach You Valuable Lessons
When Iman was 25 years old, he decided to move from Iran to Canada with his wife. With no plan, no money, and little knowledge of English, what was he supposed to do? He applied to many jobs, from janitor to cashier to everything that was available, but he still couldn't find a job. As an immigrant, it can be very difficult to find a good job, especially right after the 2008 recession.
Iman tried and tried but nobody gave him an opportunity. Under pressure, people tend to get the best ideas and that’s exactly what happened to Iman. He was 17 days away from being homeless when he had an epiphany and realized that if no one was going to give him an opportunity, he was going to build it himself. That’s how Iman started his first business! When you become uncomfortable, your brain finds the way to find a solution and that’s when you have to take action.
2) Change Can Be Scary
Change is one of those things that is easier said than done. Everybody can tell you to change something in your life, but unless you are brave enough to confront that discomfort, you are never going to take action. Change is hard because you know you are going to lose something in the process. Sometimes we are stuck in toxic situations that are comfortable only because they are familiar to us. Even if change is the only answer, it’s still hard to forward to something better.
David and Iman share their experiences with change and how even changing something you already have can still be scary. The experience of starting a business is a rollercoaster and it does not matter how many times you’ve done it, starting a new one is scary and comes with new challenges. Everything that is risky and unknown is difficult to deal with but you have two great examples of how coming out of your comfort zone is the best decision you can take!
3) Teaching Unteachable People
You can share your knowledge with millions of people, but if they don’t take action with that new knowledge, the lesson is never going to be learned.
Many things don’t happen on the first try. You have to be patient and persevere during this process. It’s basically trial and error; unless you see what’s wrong with what you are doing and change it, you’ll never succeed. That’s what every successful person has done— they tried something, and if it didn’t work, they adjusted it until it was good enough to be successful!
