Katrina Ubell is a Master Certified Life and Weight Loss Coach and host of the popular Weight Loss for Busy Physicians Podcast. After completing her pediatric residency at Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin, Dr. Ubell worked in a private pediatric practice for 10 years, during which time she lost 45 pounds in 12 months without surgery, pills, unhealthy crash diets, or fitness apps. In this episode of the Break Free Podcast, Ubell discusses her experience as a pediatrician and as a mother, to help other busy professionals prioritize their health and achieve permanent weight loss.
Katrina’s work has been featured in notable outlets like NPR and on several industry podcasts like The Doctor’s Life with Dianne Ansari-Winn, MD and The Science of Self-Help with Dr. Jennifer Greer. If you are ready to hear how Katrina has been able to accomplish this amazing transition here is her process:
1) Change Your Focus
The root of how Katrina got the idea to transition into this career path was through her own experiences with weight loss. She could lose the weight but never keep it off, and while trying to find resources specialized for physicians she couldn’t find anything. In that moment the idea sparked, and she went from a problem focused place to a solution focused place.
Taking yourself out of the mindset of making the positive changes you need.
2) Set Yourself Goals
For Katrina, obviously making the decision to leave her practice was not an easy over-night choice. What did make it easier was giving herself stepping stone goals.
For example, once she began thinking about the possibility of leaving, she set herself a 10 year plan, which then became 5, which then became 2, all the way until she finally felt ready to take that step. Katrina said, “once I opened my mind to the possibility, I became more prepared to take that challenge.”
Change isn’t easy, but if you allow yourself to transition at your own pace you would be surprised at how much more confidence you will build in yourself.
3) Constantly Be Learning
As someone who came from a medical background, Katrina was already use to the challenges of learning constantly, but making this change was a new type of education.
After already being coached by Life Coach School, she realized what an amazing skill that was. Once she was officially done with her medical practice, she was able to join a webinar that promoted the class that she took and then used online schooling to find her direction.
Through doing this she was able to find hidden skills she didn’t realize she had and were now able to help her in this new path in life. Her biggest takeaway from going through changing careers was don’t wait until you’re ready. Don’t let fear hold you back. You don’t need to be sure you need to be determined.
