Derek Lobo: Change is the Best Medicine

Are you looking for different opportunities? Do you wish your life was different? Derek had similar questions when he realized that a corporate job wasn’t his dream career. He was brave enough to change career paths and now he joins us here to share his success story!

Derek Lobo, Resourceful Entrepreneur

Derek is a successful business owner that has gone through ups and downs to get to where he is today. Not everyone has their life figured out right away, and this is something Derek had to deal with. He had an amazing job in a big corporation that gave him a great income, but money becomes less important when you are still unhappy. He decided to change his path and moved to a completely different industry where he found fulfillment and success.

Here are three amazing lessons from this podcast episode:

1) Seize Opportunities

There are opportunities everywhere, but it’s up to you to look for them. Derek came to Canada when he was around 8 years old and his family knew that the sacrifice was going to be worth it. They knew there were better opportunities in Canada. Derek has taken advantage of that opportunity and decided to make the best of it.

Derek went from having a corporate job to being a consultant for apartment construction. In this journey, he has realized that the older he gets, the narrower his path gets and that has helped him find a small niche in the industry. Now he is happy helping other people while running a successful business.

2) Not Everyone Should Have a Business

Having a business has become more popular in the past few years, but that doesn’t mean that everyone is supposed to have one. Derek has always loved advising young people, and this is something he shares all the time, just because everyone is doing it doesn’t mean you have to.

Being a business owner seems so fun and exciting, and while that is true, you also have to take into consideration how difficult and stressful it is. The rewards are amazing if you make it work, but just consider that it might take time and it will definitely not be easy. If you have the urge to do it, you should go for it and don’t let anything stop you! But don’t think that it is the only way to success. There are many different definitions of success, and it’s up to you to define what that looks like for yourself.

3) Having a Support System

It’s really easy to forget who you are once things start going according to your plans. Seeing the rewards after all your hard work is one of the best feelings in the world, but at the same, you cannot let it go to your head. Your ego will rise and the fall is going to hurt. Instead, take wins and losses with the same grain of salt. Keep your celebrations short, and move forward to your next goal instead of getting stuck in your first success.

Having people you can count on that will help you keep your feet on the ground is important. Be careful who you let into your life because sadly, not everyone wants the best for you. Make sure you surround yourself with people that want the best for you and who you also want to see succeed.

You become what you think.
