JT Terrell: The Balance Between Hard Work and Talent
Are you scared of asking for help? Do you feel you’re not giving your 100% to be successful? JT had to overcome these obstacles to be as successful as he is today. Tune in to this episode to learn more about his success story and tips on how to overcome it.
JT Terrell, CEO Coach
JT is a talented person that coaches CEOs from large companies, but his path to success wasn’t easy. He had to transform his dream of becoming a rock star and overcome his limiting beliefs to get to where he is today. He now lives a fulfilling life helping others.
Here are three key lessons from JT’s story:
1) Success Doesn’t Happen Overnight
Growing a business is not something you can do overnight— it requires time and a lot of patience. JT and his partner had to spend almost six years to actually create a company and start gaining profits. If you’re thinking of starting your own company, make sure you know the hard work it requires. There is a process to everything, and it is up to you to decide if you are going to get the most out of it or not.
JT now understands the importance of having a plan for everything you do. It can be your daily plan or a plan for the next year of your business. Planning helps you set your goals and know what to do to accomplish them. Everything takes time, so don’t give up. Instead, try to learn to enjoy the process!
2) It’s Okay To Ask For Help
Ego is one of the biggest reasons why people refuse to receive help. It can impede on your growth and success, so make sure you take the time to acknowledge and work through it. Everyone could use help and it can be difficult to accept it, but know that you are not alone. It’s important to open yourself up to the advice of others.
There was a time when JT’s business needed a lot of help and it was hard for him to accept it. He would use excuses like, “I don’t have time” or, “I don’t have money,” but he didn't realize the importance of hearing the advice of people until he and his business partner hired a business coach. They rapidly grew as a company, to the point where they were able to sell their business because of how great it was performing!
3) Natural Talent or Hard Work?
JT grew up talented which meant he didn't need to work too hard to be successful. He got good grades, was athletic, and played music— he was a talented teenager. This is why when it was time to go to college, he wasn’t able to fully acclimate to the new environment that emphasized hard studious work. He decided to drop out and focus on his musical career.
He started to learn the importance of hard work when he started his company and he had to give 15 hours of his day to make the company survive. This is why a lot of people prefer to jump right into business instead of attending school. Having a business offers an intense, hands-on education that traditional school often can’t compete with. If you can relate to the talented-but-unmotivated conundrum, JT encourages you to find a way to learn how to work hard and step up your game because you will definitely need it later in life.
