Finding What’s Next with Gary Mottershead
Is a chapter closing in your life? Are you figuring out what the next step to a fulfilling life is? Gary Mottershead went through a similar process.
Gary Mottershead, Entrepreneur and Coach
Gary has the mind of an engineer. Having a lack of structure can be distressing, and the moments in life where things are up in the air can be difficult to navigate. After selling a business, there aren’t any guidelines on what to do next. Gary’s plan was to seek opportunities, and as he learned to open himself up to those opportunities, he began living a successful and fulfilling life.
Tune in to learn more about these three key elements from Gary’s success story:
1) Spirit of entrepreneurship
Back in the day, becoming an entrepreneur was interpreted as something negative. Others would see you trying to make your own idea come to life and think “that person should just get a job”. It wasn’t the way it is now— these days, people know that entrepreneurs work incredibly hard to achieve their goals. Different things drive someone to making it on their own. Some people have the spirit of entrepreneurship in them thanks to a role model, and others have it because they are looking for what many people want… freedom.
Gary understood that being an entrepreneur was a lifestyle, not just a job. Even when he didn’t have a job or a project, he acted as an entrepreneur. There was a time where he didn’t know what to do next but he wanted to begin a new project. What did he do? He hired an assistant even though he had no revenue. Doing this made him feel successful before he really was. This helped him get into a mindset of abundance, which led him to work harder to keep that assistant for as long as he could. That attitude made him the successful man he is today.
2) Might as well give it a try
What are you waiting for? What do you want to accomplish? Maybe you are trying to start a new chapter in your life but don’t know where to start or what to do. Opportunities are always surrounding you— you just have to be open to receiving them and giving them a chance.
When Gary was in his 40s, he sold his business and only had income from coaching others. He needed to start all over again and was looking for opportunities. One of his friends offered him a job in product sales. For three years his answer was no, until he told himself: “might as well give it a try”. That decision opened many doors and he has been running his business for more than 20 years in that market.
3) Believe in yourself
Having a business is more than just the idea itself. It has a lot to do with your commitment and belief in yourself. It doesn’t matter how many times you have fallen down, what matters is how many times you get back up. Your business idea could be worth millions but if you don’t believe you can accomplish something and make a great business out of it, you will not go far because everything starts with your mindset.
Gary had a difficult time with his business. He had an important meeting with one of their providers and realized that if he wanted to show that his company was worthy, he needed to believe it first. He needed to believe that he was capable of getting out of the messy situation. He learned the importance of trusting in oneself to take important decisions and make commitments. It’s important to get out of your own way and let your skills do the talking instead of the voice in your head that hold you back. When life is lived with confidence, more things become possible.
